Shawn TheDon’s talent can’t be denied. The up and coming rapper from Chicago has a sound that is unique to himself and his story. His latest mixtape, Pain The Mixtape, is an ode to the challenges and struggles he has overcome. When he was 14, he was charged as an adult for a crime he did not commit. “Pain the mixtape was inspired by my life. The pain that I reflected as a youth also inspired me to write this mixtape.” Shawn keeps it honest with lyrics that remain raw and open throughout every track. He cites his musical influences as J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Adele and his most favorite, Meek Mill. The lyricism of all four is reflected in Shawn’s flow. His writing is incredible - it even landed him a feature in the Chicago Tribune!
His adopted brother is who stood by him while he was growing up. They would rap and freestyle together with Chance the Rapper’s brother in the Chicago Public Library in the heart of downtown. However when it came to the music industry, Shawn had to navigate it on his own. “Nobody encouraged me to be an artist. I encouraged myself. But I will say my listeners encouraged me to keep it up and I’ve been writing/doing poetry since 2014 and I saw that as a way to escape.”
Shawn’s music is very honest with his struggles and journey. He hopes to be a source of inspiration to all who listen to his music. “One thing I would like to say to the Youth is don’t never give up no matter how hard life gets. There is a plan for your life and if you do what is right and chase your dreams, you will be blessed. I survived traumatic experiences and am still here to tell my story and testimony through art and that’s the best feeling in the world to see how your art can affect somebody else I’n a positive way.” As Shawn says in the opening lines of “Diamond in the Dirt”, a track off of Pain The Mixtape, “I’m a GOAT. I am a winner. The strong will survive. I’m a diamond in the dirt.” It’s a title he has earned though dedication and faith in himself.
